Shakaira John joined Babin Bessner Spry LLP as an Associate in 2017. Prior to joining the firm, Shakaira completed her articles at a prominent securities litigation boutique, where she worked on a variety of corporate commercial litigation matters.

Shakaira has been involved in a broad spectrum of litigation proceedings, including complex corporate commercial disputes, regulatory investigations by the Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada, the Ontario Securities Commission, disciplinary proceedings by the Law Society of Upper Canada, and Chartered Professional Accountants Ontario, insolvency matters, contractual disputes, class actions, and various other matters before the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. She has also worked on matters in Alberta and British Columbia, and has appeared with counsel before the Superior Courts of those provinces. 

Shakaira completed her J.D. at Osgoode Hall Law School. During law school, Shakaira received the award of Distinguished Oralist in the Lerners Cup Moot. Shakaira was also selected to present a research paper she authored at the Osgoode Hall Law Journal J.D. Research Symposium. Prior to law school, she received her B.A. (Hons.) with Distinction at the University of Toronto.

Outside of law, Shakaira is an avid yoga practitioner and cyclist. She also enjoys writing and reading literature.

  • Various individuals seeking an oppression remedy in both Ontario and British Columbia
  • A national corporation in an insolvency application under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act, and in the receivership context pursuant to the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act
  • Individuals under investigation by the Ontario Securities Commission and the Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada for violations of the Securities Act
  • Various investment advisors involved in lawsuits alleging breaches of fiduciary duty and contract
  • Various individuals and corporations in complex corporate commercial litigation and contractual matters
